Joao Ribeiro de Barros was the first aviator in the Western Hemisphere to cross te Atlantic Ocean. Not being supported by the Brazilian government, he used its own money to buy a second hand aircraft S55 Savoia Marchetti, later renamed "JAHU" in a tribute to his hometown.
He asked
Savoia Marchetti some repairs and changes and on October 26th 1926, the
Jahu started the adventure; the trip was marked by many mishaps,
sabotages, malaria and disputes among crew members. At the end Jahu
arrived to the Santo Amaro dam on August 1st 1927.
Jahu is the last remaining example of S55: the plane is preserved in Brazil, at the TAM Museum at San
Carlos (Sao Paulos).
